Step 1: The drive itself
Livermore to SFO is roughly 45 miles. Off-peak — before 6 AM, midday, or late evening — allow about 55 to 70 minutes. In weekday commute windows, the trip can run 90 minutes to 2 hours, with the San Mateo Bridge and Peninsula stretch as the usual chokepoints.
Step 2: Airport time
- Domestic flights: be inside the terminal 2 hours before departure.
- International flights: 3 hours — international check-in counters often close 60 minutes before departure, and that cutoff is strict.
- Checked bags: most airlines close bag drop 45 minutes before domestic departures.
- Holiday weeks and Monday mornings: add another 30 minutes for security.
Worked examples
- 8 AM domestic flight: at the terminal by 6 AM, leave Livermore around 5:00 AM (pre-commute, drive is fast). Pickup: 4:45–5:00 AM.
- 11 AM international flight: at the terminal by 8 AM — but that drive lands in peak commute, so allow up to 2 hours. Leave by 6:00 AM.
- 9 PM domestic flight: at the terminal by 7 PM; leaving by 5:30 PM clears the worst of the evening commute with margin.
